The Categories

There are 27 categories in the Scottish Press Awards, which are described in more detail below.  To download a hard copy of the categories, please click here.

The Scottish Press Awards welcomes entries for both print and digital formats, given that news is an increasingly multi-media service, across newspapers, websites, mobiles and tablets.  The judges are keen to receive examples of digital execution, and in particular where print and digital are integrated to enhance the reader’s experience and interaction.

1. Sports Photographer of the Year

For the best five photographs capturing the big incidents in sporting activities.  For this category you must submit both the photo and the newspaper page it appeared in (with the date visible).

To qualify photographs must be for Scottish publications or portraying a Scottish affair for a non-Scottish print or online publication.

2. News Photographer of the Year

visitscotland_smallFor the best five photographs capturing the essence of news stories; the pictures that are worth a thousand words.  For this category you must submit both the photo and the newspaper page it appeared in (with the date visible).

To qualify photographs must be for Scottish publications or portraying a Scottish affair for a non-Scottish print or online publication.

3. Arts/Entertainment Journalist of the Year

JW_Logo_KW Lock Up_WIPFor the best three articles or single planned series of three articles which appeared in any one print or online newspaper and any associated supplements during the year.  This category is open to all journalists writing in the following subject areas – show business, television, radio, theatre, music, film, books, critiques, reviews and any other arts/entertainment subject not covered by these headings.

4. Young Journalist of the Year

For the three best articles, news stories or single planned series of articles or news stories by a journalist aged 25 at the time of publication, appearing in any one print or online newspaper and any associated supplements during the year.  Any series submitted should not exceed three articles.  Please enter your date of birth on the entry form.

5. Interviewer of the Year

For the three best interviews appearing in any newspaper, magazine or online publication during the year.  Entries must feature three interviews with different subjects and can come from any section of the publication, including business and sport.

6. Political Journalist of the Year

PrintFor the three best political stories, or one series of political stories, which appeared in any print or online newspaper and any associated supplements during the year.  Any series submitted should not exceed three articles.

7. Columnist of the Year

For the three best articles written by a columnist in any print or online newspaper and any associated supplements during the year.  A maximum of three articles should be submitted in this category.

8. Local/Weekly Sports Writer of the Year

For the three best sports stories, or one series of sports stories, on any one topic which appeared in any one local or weekly print or online newspaper and any associated supplements during the year.  Any series submitted should not exceed three articles.

9. Sports Columnist of the Year

For the three best articles or single planned series of articles which appeared in print or online newspapers and any associated supplements during the year.  This category is open to all journalists writing sports-related columns.  Any series submitted should not exceed three articles.

10. Sports Feature Writer of the Year

For the three best sports features, which appeared in any one print or online newspaper and any associated supplements during the year.  Where an entry involves a series of features, entries should not exceed three articles.

11. Sports News Writer of the Year

For the three best sports news stories, or one series of news stories, on any one topic which appeared in any one print or online newspapers and any associated supplements during the year.  Any series submitted should not exceed three articles.

12. Financial/Business Journalist of the Year

clydesdale_smallFor the three best articles or single planned series of articles which appeared in any print or online newspaper and any associated supplements during the year.  This category is open to all journalists writing in the following subject areas – business, industry, technology and financial affairs.  Any series submitted should not exceed three articles.

 

13. Local/Weekly Feature Writer of the Year

For the three best general feature articles or single planned series of three general feature articles which appeared in any print or online newspaper and any associated supplements during the year.

14. Feature Writer of the Year

15. Outstanding Digital Journalist of the Year

ecs_smallRecognises the individual who has done the most to harness digital opportunities for effective and innovative electronic delivery of news content which enhances the overall multi-platform strategy of the publication.

A maximum of three examples should be submitted in this category.

16. Weekly Newspaper of the Year

For the three best non-consecutive issues of a local weekly or bi-weekly newspaper published during the year.  Sunday newspapers and weekly magazines are excluded from this category.  Please note: in this category, 3 copies of each of the 3 issues are required and they must be sent in as hard copies (i.e. 9 copies in total).

To accompany each submission you must give a 500 word summary of why your paper deserves to be Weekly Newspaper of the Year.

17. Scoop of the Year

SNSFor the best exclusive story which created the greatest impact appearing in any print or online newspaper and any associated supplements during the year.

18. Front Page of the Year

PrintFor the front page making the most impact taking into account headline, photographs and presentation.  The award is intended to recognise the work of production journalists.  One front page only per entry.

19. Journalism Team of the Year

PPL_logo_cropped2For the best story or series of stories appearing in any print or online newspapers and any associated supplements during the year.  The award will be presented to a number of journalists contributing to the story or series of stories.  Entries in this category are limited to a maximum of six articles.  Please give your story/series of stories a name on the entry form.

20. Digital Team of the Year

The award recognises the team working within a multi-platform organisation (which includes print), which has displayed the most innovative use of digital publishing and communication to widen readership appeal and engagement, and grow audiences.

A maximum of three examples should be submitted in this category.

21. Local/Weekly Campaign of the Year

For the best campaign printed in any local or weekly print or online newspaper and any associated supplements during the year.  Entries in this category are limited to a maximum of six articles per subject.  Entries must represent the range and scope of the campaign and should highlight aspects such as reader involvement.  This award will be made to one journalist or a number of journalists contributing to a campaign.  Please name your campaign on the entry form.

22. Campaign of the Year

amazon_croppedFor the best campaign printed in any print or online newspaper and any associated supplements during the year.  Entries in this category are limited to a maximum of six articles per subject.  Entries must represent the range and scope of the campaign and should highlight aspects such as reader involvement.  This award will be made to one journalist or a number of journalists contributing to a campaign.  Please name your campaign on the entry form.

23. Local/Weekly Reporter of the Year

For the three best news stories, or one series of news stories, on any one topic, which appeared in any one local or weekly print or online newspaper and any associated supplements during the year.  Any series submitted should not exceed three articles.

24. Reporter of the Year

25.The Nicola Barry Award

Women in Journalism ScotlandThe Nicola Barry Award is open to all women journalists working in print and online media in Scotland who deserve recognition for their work in issue-led reportage or commentary.  This reflects Nicola’s passion for standing up against injustice in the workplace and in the wider world.  Submissions are sought from both peers of an award-worthy individual and also from individuals themselves.  Entries must include three interviews or articles or a single planned series of three articles.

26. Journalist of the Year

No entries should be submitted for this award.

27. Newspaper of the Year

SNSTo be selected by the judges.  For the three best non-consecutive issues of a daily or Sunday newspaper published during the year.  Please note: in this category, only one copy of each newspaper is required and it must be sent in hard copy.

To accompany each submission you must explain in 500 words why your paper deserves to be Newspaper of the Year.

The deadline for entry into this category is Thursday 7th February 2019.
